Jess Rowe explains her husband's absence from the news desk

<p>Jessica Rowe has shared the reason why her husband Peter Overton has been absent from his presenting duties on the <em>9News</em> desk for the last few weeks. </p> <p>Taking to her Instagram, Rowe explained that Overton has been at home recovering from surgery and will remain on leave for another few weeks. </p> <p>“Many of you have been missing Petee from your TV screens these past couple of weeks & have asked me where he is!” the 53-year-old began in her post. </p> <p>“Well he’s at home recovering from hip replacement surgery & getting lots of TLC. Peter Dutton defends comparing pro-Palestine rally to Port Arthur massacre

<p>Peter Dutton has doubled down on controversial comments he made comparing a pro-Palestine rally to the Port Arthur massacre in 1996. </p> <p>The leader of the opposition sparked fierce criticism fort he remarks he made when discussing the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia as the Israel-Palestine war rages on. </p> <p>He compared a pro-Palestine protest that took place outside Sydney Opera House on October 9th, just days after the first attacks by Hamas, to the deadly massacre in Tasmania in which 35 people were killed which prompted major gun reforms in Australia under the Howard government.</p> <p>Dutton later repeated the comments, insisting Mr Howard’s response had been “strong” and claimed Mr Albanese has not done enough to stem the rise in anti-Semitism.</p> <p>The Opposition Leader appeared on <em>Today</em> on Friday morning where he again defended his comments when asked if he had gone too far with the comparison. </p> <p>“The point I was making, which is absolutely a legitimate one, is that I thought this was a time for the Prime Minister (Anthony Albanese) to show leadership and to step up,” Mr Dutton said.</p> <p>“I think, with John Howard, who stood up at a point of national importance for our country, demonstrated leadership and changed the course of history for the better. The Prime Minister has allowed this rise of anti-Semitism in our country.”</p> <p>“I don’t resile from that at all.”</p> <p>Mr Dutton’s fury was sparked by comments made by the Foreign Minister Penny Wong in her own speech earlier this week, which left the door open for Australia to back Palestinian statehood in the UN. </p> <p>“Penny Wong never went to cabinet with this proposal. It’s not agreed to by the Palestinian leaders here in Australia,” he said. </p> <p>Government Services Minister Bill Shorten then chimed in on the debate, arguing there was nothing new in Senator Wong’s comments as the war in Palestine continued to claim thousands of innocent lives. </p> <p>“Labor has had as its policy for a very long time, the whole time I’ve been a member of the Labor Party, support for a two state solution,” he told Nine. </p> <p>But he said it was a grave mistake to conflate Port Arthur with the “unacceptable” rise in anti-Semitism.</p> <p>“I think probably if he had his time again in the privacy of his own head, he would probably not do (that),” Mr Shorten said. </p> <p>“They’re two separate issues. Port Arthur was a shocking, murderous, evil act in Australia. And John Howard certainly spoke up about it."</p> <p>“I think Peter, you know, has got to make his point. That’s his job. But I think he should work with the Prime Minister to call out inflammatory language here.”</p> <p>Mr Dutton went on to clarify he was just trying to make a parallel between the two leaders’ responses. </p> <p>“John Howard stood up for our country at a time when he needed moral clarity. Peter Brock's long-time partner passes away aged 77

<p>The motorsport community is mourning the loss of Bev Brock, a formidable figure whose unwavering support and dedication were instrumental in the legendary career of her former long-time partner, Peter Brock.</p> <p>Bev, aged 77, passed away at her Melbourne home on Sunday morning after bravely battling stage 4 cancer for two years.</p> <p>For almost three decades, Bev stood as a steadfast presence by Peter's side, both on and off the racetrack. While they were never married, their bond was undeniable, marking a partnership that transcended mere labels. From 1977 until their separation in 2005, Bev played an integral role in shaping Peter's remarkable motorsport journey, becoming synonymous with his successes and enduring legacy.</p> <p>Born on January 15, 1947, just outside Perth, Bev's early years hinted at the strength of character and resilience that would define her life. Among seven siblings, she cultivated a spirit of determination and compassion that would later leave an indelible mark on those around her. Following her passion for education, Bev pursued a career in teaching, imparting knowledge in science and home economics to countless students.</p> <p>Bev's life took a new trajectory when she met Peter Brock. Together, they navigated the highs and lows of motorsport, sharing a journey that was as exhilarating as it was demanding. Despite the challenges, Bev remained a pillar of support, balancing multiple roles with grace, intelligence and purpose. Her commitment to Peter's racing career was unwavering, whether she was managing logistics, offering counsel, or simply cheering from the sidelines.</p> <p>Beyond her contributions to motorsport, Bev's philanthropic endeavours reflected her generous spirit and compassionate nature – and her involvement with various charities culminated in the prestigious Order of Australia in 2016. From supporting The Skyline Foundation to her active engagement with Melbourne Rotary, Bev's impact extended far beyond the confines of the racetrack.</p> <p>In a heartfelt tribute, Bev's son, James Brock, honoured his mother's legacy:</p> <p>“Bev was a dedicated parent, always making time to make a costume for a play or help out on a school camp,” he wrote. “She dedicated her life to helping Peter’s racing career taking on multiple roles, all met with skill, smarts and purpose.</p> <p>“Bev was also involved with multiple charities earning her an Order of Australia in 2016.</p> <p>“Over the last few years she focused her time and passion on The Skyline Foundation, Melbourne Rotary, public speaking and her ever expanding family.</p> <p>“She leaves behind her three children, seven cherished grandchildren and a host of loved ones she wrapped into her life as though they were her own.</p> <p>“Her loss will be immense as her presence, wisdom and support can never be matched.”</p> <p>Universally known as "Bevo," she was not only the driving force behind Peter's success but also a cherished friend who selflessly cared for others. From the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Namibia, his adventures have been the stuff of envy for many.</p> <p>But hold onto your boarding passes, folks, because Overton recently embarked on a journey of a different kind – one that involved less hard-hitting reporting and more ice skating in Central Park. Yes, you guessed it; he took a trip with his two teenage daughters, Allegra and Giselle, and wife, TV host Jessica Rowe! "I'm useless," he confesses with a chuckle. But hey, at least he's honest about it.</p> <p>But the adventure didn't stop at the bright lights of the big cities; they even made a pit stop in Winchester, England, where Overton himself was born. "Pretty brutal": Peter Garrett slams Taylor Swift for price gouging tickets

<p>Peter Garrett has taken aim at Taylor Swift, calling out her extrationate ticket prices for a place at the Eras Tour. </p> <p>The Midnight Oil frontman  joined <em>107.1 SAFM’s Bec & Soda</em> radio show on Friday when he was informed that he was co-host Mark “Soda” Soderstrom’s favourite artist, or in other words, “his Taylor Swift.”</p> <p>Garrett didn't take too kindly to the comparison, and launched into a rant about the price of Swift's concert tickets. </p> <p>“I’m not price gouging like Taylor, to be blunt,” he began.</p> <p>The radio hosts reminisced about attending a Midnight Oil concert in 1985 when tickets were just $15.90, compared to Swifts forking out hundreds of dollars for the highly anticipated Eras Tour. </p> <p>Tickets for Swift’s Australian tour ranged from $79.90 for G-reserve tickets to $379.90 for A-reserve ticket, while also offering fans multiple VIP packages, reaching an eye-watering $1249.90 for a single ticket. </p> <p>Some diehard fans were quick to complain about the lack of added value in the packages, which included premium seats with add-ons such as a tote bags, collectable pins, stickers and postcards.</p> <p>Garrett continued, “I wouldn’t begrudge anyone’s success, that’s the first thing to say."</p> <p>"She’s obviously touching a chord with masses of people, particularly people of a certain age group who have experienced growing up at a certain time, and what she’s singing and talking about is really ringing true with them.” </p> <p>However, he also said that “the dollar end of it having looked at it from a distance, having been in this business forever, is pretty brutal.”</p> <p>Garrett continued to share his disapproval of Swift's Australian domination, complaining about how five of her albums dominated the ARIA charts, booting Aussie artists off the ladder. </p> <p>“She is so pervasive, she has become such a phenomenon, that she is displacing artists left right and centre. In our ARIA top 100 chart – that’s the Australian record industry chart – I think at one point in the last week or two, we only had three Australian artists in that top 100,” Garrett said. </p> <p>“Not good enough! And that’s not me crying about it, I’ve had an incredible run. <p>Peter Dutton has urged Aussies to boycott Woolworths, after the supermarket giant <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/money-banking/woolworths-under-fire-for-dropping-australia-day-merch" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> their decision to not stock any Australia Day merchandise. </p> <p>The opposition leader lashed out at the "woke" decision, and took aim at Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci on 2GB radio on Thursday. </p> <p>"I think it's up to customers whether they want to go in and buy the product or not. Grieving family speaks after three siblings killed in light plane crash

<p>The Nally family, who tragically lost four of their loved ones in a devastating plane crash, has broken their silence following the heart-wrenching incident.</p> <p>Peter Nally, aged 65, was piloting the light aircraft when the accident occurred, claiming the lives of not only himself but also his three cherished grandchildren: Raphael, 11; Evita, nine; and Philomena, six. The crash took place near Canberra around 2:50pm on Friday.</p> <p>In a brief statement released through the NSW Police, members of the Nally family expressed the profound grief they are currently enduring. Disturbing audio recordings captured the desperate efforts of controllers attempting to establish contact with Mr Nally, to no avail.</p> <p>Within a matter of minutes, the aircraft crashed, igniting into flames upon impact at a rural property near Lake George in the New South Wales Tablelands. Tragically, everyone on board perished instantly, and the aircraft was obliterated.</p> <p>Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene after receiving a report from a witness who had seen flames emanating from the wreckage. It was a false positive like I have said all along! <p>Channel 10 is suing its former political editor, Peter van Onselen, for an alleged breach of contract after he wrote a column tearing into his former employer’s business skills.</p> <p>Anonymous sources told news.com.au that Mr van Onselen signed a non-disparagement clause and received a financial settlement after leaving the network.</p> <p>He had announced he was returning to academia, leaving his daily political news role at Ten in March 2023 after four years. New-look Peter Helliar tells all after I'm a Celeb exit

<p dir="ltr">Peter Helliar, the latest<em> I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!</em> evictee, has opened up about his final months before quitting <em>The Project</em> and his dramatic weight loss, in one of his first interviews since leaving the jungle.</p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking to <em>B105’s</em> Stav, Abby and Matt on Wednesday morning, Peter revealed that he had lost 7.5kgs, after spending three weeks in the jungle surviving on rationed rice and beans.</p> <p dir="ltr">“[I lost] 7.5kg - it's what I've registered, so I'm not sure if I have caught up with Nick,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">The comedian also explained that leaving the camp wasn’t as easy as he expected, with all the rigorous health examinations he’s had to do.</p> <p dir="ltr">“You come out and you have this idea that you will go to a nice hotel and have a beer, but you come out and meet with a psych and a medical team to make sure everything is okay” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“So there's a series of meetings that you have to go through, so I haven't really stopped since I've come out. I had some dinner and rang home and that's about it,” he added.</p> <p dir="ltr">Peter also shared that the first meal he ate after leaving the jungle was a bowl of spaghetti bolognese with a beer.</p> <p dir="ltr">The comedian was one of the few contestants who had been asked to appear on<em> I’m A Celebrity</em> since the first season. He’d always refused, using his role as a panellist on <em>The Project</em> as an excuse.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Whenever they did ask, I was a bit concerned they were trying to get me off The Project. I was wary of leaving the desk for too long,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">After<a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/tv/peter-helliar-s-typically-hilarious-farewell" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> leaving <em>The Project</em> late last year</a>, Peter was approached again and this time thought "’Why not?’ I haven't got the excuse of the other job so I jumped at it and I had a great time”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Peter revealed that he decided to quit as he was “getting a little sick of being associated with the news cycle,” but didn’t blame it on the show.</p> <p dir="ltr">“That’s got nothing to do with the show, but just the way commentary goes these days. News has become pretty toxic, as far as the debate around news … I’m pretty happy to be going into some sillier, fun areas in the future,” he added.</p>

"Vale dear friend": McLeod's Daughters actor tragically drowns

<p>Australian actor Peter Hardy, 66, has been revealed as the victim who drowned at Fremantle beach.</p> <p>He died as a result of a snorkeling incident, <em>The West Australian</em> reported.</p> <p>The actor played Jimmy Drane in three episodes of the iconic Aussie soap <em>Neighbours</em> in 1997 but is best known for his roles in <em>McLeod’s Daughters</em> and crime drama <em>Chopper</em>.</p> <p>According to The West Australian, the 66-year-old had travelled to Perth from London to visit his mother after building a home in the UK, <em>The West Australian </em>reported.</p> <p>His brother Michael shared the tragic news on social media, “I'm devastated to say that my brother, Peter Hardy, passed away suddenly this morning... Rest in Peace my beloved little brother.”</p> <p>Tributes have started flooding in following the announcement.</p> <p>“This news is such a heartbreaking shock. He'll be held in the wide arms of the ocean he grow up beside, and in the hearts of all those he welcomed into his vital and witty orbit. Sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” Ross Anderson wrote.</p> <p>Hardy’s friend Andy Burns said, “On the morning of March 16th a dear friend was taken from us... the amazing and beautiful Peter Hardy drowned while snorkelling at South Beach Perth.”</p> <p>“He was 66 years old and looked like a Greek god, so fit, and so happy to be back in his native WA visiting from London where he had made his home.</p> <p>“Words cannot express how deeply I feel this loss, We've been close friends since living together in Neutral Bay Sydney in the mid 80s.</p> <p>“He was a superb actor a wonderful singer and guitarist he also played drums and sax. He always loved performing in the theatre as well as film and TV. He decided to buy a canal boat in London which he set up beautifully with some recording gear and he'd send me guitar tracks recorded there to add backings to.</p> <p>“Heartfelt condolences to all his family and many friends over this devastating loss especially his beautiful girlfriend Lysa our thoughts are with you…</p> <p>“Vale dear friend Peter Hardy RIP... <p dir="ltr">Jess Rowe has shared the sneaky way she impressed her now-husband Peter Overton when they first met.</p> <p dir="ltr">The presenter and self-professed “crap housewife” sat down with Today Extra to talk about her new cookbook in collaboration with the Australian Women's Weekly, <em>Everyday Not-So-Crap Family Meals</em>, when she shared the lengths she went to in order impress the 9News presenter when they first started dating.</p> <p dir="ltr">"This was before I owned my crap housewife title, when I felt I had to be perfect," Jess said.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I think for some of us we feel like we have to have it all together all the time, so Pete was having a bit of a work dinner and he wanted to impress his 60 Minutes colleagues.”</p> <p dir="ltr">"So they came around to dinner and I thought 'what am I going to cook? I can't just serve up spag bol for something completely different.'"</p> <p dir="ltr">Rather than setting an unreasonable challenge for herself, Jess enlisted the help of her sister, a qualified chef, for the evening.</p> <p dir="ltr">"She cooked up a tagine, I still don't know what that is, but she made it for me with all of these other things," she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">"It was so delicious, but the problem was everyone thought it was so wonderful, they wanted the recipe."</p> <p dir="ltr">Jessica managed to fudge her way along telling them "a bit of this, a bit of that" when they asked what was in the meal, but they were persistent and really wanted to know how she did it.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I had to get my sister to email me the recipe the next day and I forwarded it on," she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Now, after 19 years of marriage, the mother-of-two has improved slightly in the kitchen: enough to release <em>Everyday Not-So-Crap Family Meals</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Instagram</em></p>

Peter Stefanovic breaks silence on Karl vs. Michael fight

<p>Peter Stefanovic has lifted the lid on how his brother Karl is doing in the wake of the recent media storm surrounding his fight with Michael Clarke. </p> <p>The younger Stefanovic spoke on Nova FM’s <em>Fitzy and Wippa show</em> on Tuesday morning, sharing how Karl is holding up. </p> <p>“I think he’s going okay, yeah. Yeah, he’s hanging in there,” the <em>Sky News</em> host replied.</p> <p>However, when pressed by Fitzy on whether Karl’s long-standing friendship with the former cricket star was “over”, Peter was vague.</p> <p>“You never know how these things work out. You know, there’s ebbs and flows,” he told the hosts, before adding that Karl was in “(paparazzi) city” at the moment.</p> <p>“And it’s never a flattering photo they take, is it? It’s always mid-stride,” Peter joked.</p> <p>Karl is yet to comment on the public scuffle himself, while Michael Clarke issued a grovelling apology after the footage of the stoush quickly went viral. </p> <p>Earlier this week, he said in a statement to The Daily Telegraph, “I accept full responsibility for this altercation and am shattered by my actions.”</p> <p>“I’m absolutely gutted I’ve put people I hold in the highest regard in this position. Richard Wilkins' emotional tribute to fallen star Renée Geyer

<p>Legendary Australian soul and jazz singer Renée Geyer has been remembered in a moving tribute from Richard Wilkins.</p> <p>Renée died at the age of 69 following complications from hip surgery, with her family telling supporters in a statement via Renée’s record label that “it was discovered that Renée also had inoperable lung cancer … she was in no pain and died peacefully amongst family and friends.”</p> <p>Richard, who spent time with Renée throughout his career in entertainment, recalled what the talented singer was like one-on-one, naming her a “great talent”.</p> <p>Renée’s husky vocals provided a soundtrack for many Australians during the '70s and '80s, after Renée launched her solo career with a self-titled album in September 1973.</p> <p>"She was just part of that Australian music collective from the seventies and eighties, and she never really embraced the industry," Wilkins told 9Honey Celebrity, “she did it on her own terms. She was just a true artist, really.”</p> <p>“She would be very positive and aggressive about her work,” he said, recalling how Renée would reach out to him over his response to her new releases, “and I loved her for that.”</p> <p>Renée’s talent and drive saw her awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Australian Women in Music Awards, and inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2013, Renée made history when she became the first woman to be inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame.</p> <p>Of her legacy, Richard shared his opinion that "hers was a voice for the ages and in a different time and a different place, she should have been a global superstar.</p> <p>“Us oldies love her and respect her. Whenever I've been asked over the years 'Who are the best singers in Australia or the best voices?' I'll obviously always include people like John Farnham and Tina Arena, and Renee Geyer was always one of my favourite picks.</p> <p>"She was always on my top 10 and will remain there."</p> <p>Friends and fans took to social media to share their grief, and to honour Renée alongside Wilkins.</p> <p>“Renée Geyer. A game changer. A soul diva.
